HOW DOES IPIXEL LASER TREATMENT WORK?

iPixel laser treatment is unique because it combines the results of the ablative laser technique with the patient’s comfort and delicacy of the non-ablative technique.

During the treatment, the beams of the pixel laser are split up into more beams that can make a 7×7 or 9×9 pattern. The beams go through the epidermis and the upper dermis and create pixels or microscopic heat zones. How deep the beams penetrate depends on the number of pulses.

In the 7×7 pattern, the energy is greater and goes deeper into the skin which makes it effective when treating wrinkles and acne scars.

In the 9×9 pattern, the energy is lower and it is used for gentle peeling of melasma for example.

In both patterns, each treatment point receives more fluency compared to the traditional laser therapy. This is what makes this treatment an outstanding skin resurfacing procedure.

The surrounding skin is unharmed and it triggers a fast wound healing and growth of new skin cells. This results in a rejuvenated skin appearance and smoother skin.

The patient feels slight discomfort because the depth of penetration is minimal. As this laser treatment affects only a fraction of the targeted area it can be safely performed on sensitive areas like the lower and upper eyelids, neck, décolletage, hands and arm.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

  • WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR IPIXEL LASER TREATMENT?

Anyone who wishes to improve uneven skin texture or refresh a dull skin tone can greatly benefit from this treatment. Also, fractional skin resurfacing is a good treatment solution for patients who want to get skin rejuvenation and achieve youthful-looking and glowing skin.

The treatment is beneficial for both men and women who are concerned with the signs of aging and photodamage.

  • WHO IS NOT A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR IPIXEL LASER TREATMENT?

Patients with very dark skin should avoid this laser therapy. Also, if patients have active acne, viral or bacterial infections or excessively sagging skin, they are not good candidates for this treatment. Also, if patients are sensitive to keloids scarring they should consider a different treatment.

The treatment is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding ladies, patients who have fresh tan or take photosensitive medications.

  • IPIXEL LASER SCAR TREATMENT

Different scars are formed because of an injury, surgery or acne. They can represent a big aesthetic problem and lead to diminished self-confidence.

However iPixel Laser treatment is a safe and effective way to reduce the visibility of scars. Its powerful energy creates fractional columns in the patient’s skin but it doesn’t damage the surrounding healthy tissue. Since the treatment is precise and controlled it only addresses the damaged tissue. After the course of several treatments, the skin is smoother and firmer and the scar is visibly corrected. The results are long-lasting and continually improve over the period of a few months as the new collagen fibers are produced and healthy skin tissue replaces the damaged one.

  • WHAT DOES IPIXEL LASER TREATMENT INVOLVE?

When the patient arrives at Lucia Clinic, first he/she is consulted with the Laser therapist. The therapist examines the patient’s problematic areas and determines whether he/she is a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing.

Next, the therapist creates a customized treatment plan that will specifically address the patient’s skin concerns. The treatment plan includes the depth of laser beam penetration, treatment time and others. The depth of laser beam penetration is determined by the level of severity of the patient’s skin issues.

  • IPIXEL LASER TREATMENT PREPARATION

Before the treatment day, the patient should avoid sun exposure and tanning beds. If the patient needs to go outside, he/she should wear a high SPF. Also, the patient should stay well hydrated, because this will speed up the healing of the skin.

  • ON THE DAY OF THE TREATMENT

Before the treatment starts, the patient’s face is thoroughly cleaned and the patient is given special protective eyewear. Then the patient’s targeted skin area is numbed with a topical cream.

The therapist places the applicator on the targeted area and emits a short, powerful burst of energy onto the surface of the patient’s skin. The therapist moves the applicator over the patient’s treated area bit by bit, but without overlapping. The laser creates micro-wounds or pixels and removes them in a precise way. The tissue that surrounds the pixels stays unharmed. Each time the laser emits the energy a proper grid of pixels is created. As iPixel is a fractional ablative laser, it removes the outermost layer of the skin or the epidermis and heats the underlying layer or the dermis. The laser beams are mostly absorbed by water molecules so they don’t affect the blood supply.

The ablative part of the laser is done deep in the skin and the heat stimulates the production of collagen. The body’s natural healing processes start to stimulate the growth of healthy skin tissue that will make the skin healthy, tight and smooth again.

The treatment session can last between 10 to 30minutes, but it all depends on how large the treated area is.

  • HOW DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL?

Most patients tolerate the iPixel treatment really well. During the treatment, the patients feel the sensation of warmth and mild flicking on the place where the laser is applied. If the patients are treating deeper scars or deeper wrinkles they might feel more uncomfortable. They can use a cooling device that eases the discomfort and makes the treatment more tolerable.

  • HOW MANY IPIXEL LASER TREATMENT SESSIONS ARE NECESSARY?

It is usually recommended to have a course of3 to 5 treatment sessions with 4 weeks apart.

Sometimes the patient needs only one treatment which includes only mild laser peeling for skin rejuvenation.

The number of treatment sessions depends on the patient’s specific skin concerns and is determined during the consultation with the therapist.

  • TREATMENT DOWNTIME AND SIDE EFFECTS

Since the iPixel laser treatment is performed very precisely there are fewer side effects than when ablative resurfacing lasers are used. The targeted area will be swollen and red for the first day or two. The patient may also feel stinging, itching and dryness. The patient’s skin will start to form crusts and peel after 3 to 4 days post-treatment. This will be noticed while cleansing the skin.

After 7 to 14 days the skin should be completely healed.

The skin on other body parts like décolletage, neck or hands may take longer to heal because it needs more time to change with the healthy tissue.

Usually, the patient may apply light mineral makeup 3 to 4 days after the treatment.

  • WHAT DOES AFTERCARE INCLUDE?

The patient can apply a cold pack after the procedure to ease the discomfort. He/she should avoid sun exposure for 14 days, tanning beds included. This will prevent the risk of hyperpigmentation or darker pigmentation. If the patient needs to spend time outdoor he/she should wear a high SPF.

The patient must keep the skin moisturized during the healing period. The therapist will recommend which products are the best for this purpose.

Also, the patient should refrain from strenuous exercise, sauna, hot baths and other heat treatments for at least 2 days after the treatment. It is important not to scratch, rub or pick the skin on the treated areas.

  • THE IPIXEL LASER TREATMENTS RESULTS

The patient will notice the improvement in his/her skin approximately 10 days after the treatment. The results will gradually improve over the course of a few months, once the new collagen and elastin fibers start to build up.

The skin is refreshed, wrinkles and fine lines are visibly reduced and scars are much smoother. The pigmentation is significantly reduced also. The skin feels tighter and it’s more younger-looking.

How long the results last varies from patient to patient. The skin is affected by the aging process, but the signs of aging can be significantly prolonged by this treatment. The results may last for 12 to 24 months on average.

The patient may choose to have additional touch-up treatments every 6 to 12 months to maintain the results.
