WHY DO PROBLEMS WITH PIGMENTATION APPEAR?

People’s complexion changes as their skin becomes mature. Usually this happens because of the changes in melanin production – the pigment that is responsible for skin color. As time passes, different factors affect the skin cells that form melanin. Some of these factors include too much sun exposure which leads to the appearance of hyperpigmentation or brown spots on the skin. Genetics also plays a major role in causing hyperpigmentation so some people are predisposed to develop blotchy skin. Other people may suffer from chronic skin issues like melasma or brown patches on the skin.

Dermamelan® is becoming a very popular aesthetic treatment for addressing skin blemishes because it is safe, fast and effective. Since it is a non-surgical procedure it doesn’t require long and stressful recovery period as some more invasive procedures do.

WHAT IS DERMAMELAN® FACIAL SKIN PEEL?

This procedure uses essential organic acids for removing and reducing melanin cells that cause pigmentation. The treatment combines an in-office procedure and a home-care protocol. The home-care protocol involves applying special creams in the morning and evening.

    FREQUENT QUESTIONS

    • WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR DERMAMELAN®?

Dermamelan® can be used for all skin types from lighter to darker tones. It is especially effective for patients with severe pigmentation, but it can also address mild pigmentation or sun-damaged skin.

Dermamelan® is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding ladies. Also, it is not recommended for patients who have skin illnesses or bacterial, fungal or viral infections. People who have freshly tanned skin should avoid this treatment.

    • WHAT DOES DERMAMELAN® TREATMENT INVOLVE?

When the patient arrives at Lucia Clinic, he/she is first consulted with Lucia’s skin therapist. The therapist examines the patient’s skin and determines if this treatment is suitable for the patient’s skin concerns. The patient talks about his/her previous history of skin issues and about his/her goals and expectations.

The patient must inform the therapist if he/she has had previous treatments that included glycolic acid because glycolic acid needs to be eliminated not less than a week before having Dermamelan® treatment.

Depending on the pigmentation severity, the therapist creates a customized treatment plan that includes the strength of the peel and the duration of downtime. Also, the therapist explains the treatment protocol to the patients and advises him/her on how to take care of the skin at home after the treatment.

The very treatment involves two phases for addressing pigmentation. The whole treatment cycle takes between 6 and 12 months to finish.

Phase one - first the patient’s skin is carefully cleaned. Then the therapist applies the mask to the patient’s face. The patient stays in the Clinic for about 20 minutes until the mask is completely absorbed. Then the patient gets a post-care home kit together with instructions on how to use it and can go home. The patient’s face looks tanned after the treatment because of the color of the mask.

The treatment lasts for about 45 minutes.

The patient needs to return to the Clinic for the follow-up appointment generally 1 week and then 1 month after the treatment. The patient is provided with the after-care home kit that lasts for 3 to 6 months, depending on the package.

    • After the treatment care

The patient should wait for 10 to 12 hours and then wash off the mask with lukewarm water. It is advisable not to scrub the mask, the patient should only use fingertips. The patient can remove the mask from delicate areas like the neck or eyelids a little sooner. He/she will notice that the skin starts to peel off two days after the procedure.

It’s important that the patient doesn’t accidentally wipe off the mask while leaving the Clinic and to go straight home and stay in a cool room, avoiding the wind and the sun exposure.

Phase two/post-care protocol - When the patient washes off the mask, he/she uses the gentle skin cleanser that was given to him/her by the therapist and carefully cleans the skin and dries it with a very soft towel. The day after the Dermamelan® peel, the patient’s skin will feel tight, mildly swollen and hot like a sunburn.

The first week after the treatment includes:

      ● Using the given healing cream typically 3 to 5 times a day.

      ● Using a skin moisturizer

      ● Avoiding hot showers or baths, saunas and steam rooms.

      ● Avoiding manually peeling or picking off the skin.

      ● Completely staying away from the sun.

      ● Applying the given sunscreen even when staying at home.

      ● Not applying makeup until the skin completely peels off.

The patient mustn’t use strong soaps or scrubs, only the ones that have been given to him/her by the therapist.

The skin typically starts to peel off 2 days after the treatment and continues to peel for 5 to 7 days.

Once the patient’s skin stops peeling, he/she can start applying the given Dermamelan® home-care cream.

It is important that the patient uses Dermamelan® products in 3:2:1 protocol:

      ● The first month the patient must apply the products every third day or night depending on the prescription.

      ● In the second month, the patient applies the products every second day/night.

      ● Third and following months the patient applies the products every day/night.

The cream is usually used before going to bed, in a pea-sized amount and rubbed all over the skin until it is completely absorbed. But, the skin specialist can give different instructions depending on the patient. The patient should continue to use the healing cream, skin moisturizer and sunscreen during the day.

The patient should schedule a follow-up appointment with the therapist 6 weeks after the treatment.

    • DERMAMELAN® PEEL SIDE EFFECTS AND DOWNTIME

After the treatment, the most usual side effects include flaking, redness, peeling, stinging and tenderness of the skin. When the skin starts to heal the sensitivities should stop. The side effects usually last for the first week after the treatment. The patient may feel skin tightness for a few days when he/she removes the mask. The peeling off the skin will last for approximately 7 days. The patient should use a special skin moisturizer to relieve this skin sensitivity.

The treatment downtime depends on the strength of the Dermamelan® facial peel. The patient is advised on the duration of the recovery during the initial consultation with Lucia’s skin therapist. Usually, it is between 3 and 7 days. It is essential that the patient avoids direct exposure to the sun while the skin is healing.

    • HOW MANY DERMAMELAN® PEEL SESSIONS ARE NECESSARY FOR THE BEST RESULTS?

Typically, only one Dermamelan® treatment session is enough to achieve a significant reduction in pigmentation. However, if the patient has severe pigmentation issues, then he/she can get a second session a few weeks after the first treatment. To achieve the best results it is essential that the patient follows a strict after-care protocol for the determined amount of time.

    • DERMAMELAN® FACIAL PEEL RESULTS

Every patient is different, so the results may vary. Generally, the results are visible after a week post-procedure. During the first month, the patient may see approximately 80% improvement in skin tone. The results greatly depend on the strength of the peel and can get fully noticeable after 3 months.

The results are maintained by careful use of home kit products.

Next to the improvement in pigmentation, Dermamelan® facial skin peel offers additional benefits like the reduced size of the pores, more hydrated skin, regulated oil production and overall rejuvenation of the top layer of the skin.

The patient may have additional touch-up treatments every six months to prolong the effects of the peel.
