Sweating is a completely normal bodily function – it helps people to regulate their body temperature. However, some people tend to sweat more than necessary. In that case, we are talking about hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating.

This condition might appear more in men than in women. It is also called a Silent handicap. It can make life very hard and uncomfortable because it interferes with social or professional interactions. Men who sweat too much feel out of place and slowly start to lose their confidence. Their quality of life gets significantly impacted by this embarrassing condition.

Excessive sweating generally starts in adolescence or early adulthood. It can be the worst on the underarms but it can also occur on the hands, feet or head. If it occurs just locally on one body area then it is referred to as focal hyperhidrosis. But it can also appear on larger areas of the body.

Hyperhidrosis makes people sweat even if it isn’t hot. They soak through their clothes or drip sweat constantly. They may use antiperspirants but it is not very helpful.

Botox for excessive underarm sweating is an effective treatment that can help men hold sweating under control. It is a safe and FDA-approved procedure that achieves great results and reduces excessive sweating.

How It Works

Botox is a purified protein and works as a neurotoxin. When injected into the patient’s armpits, it blocks the nerves that trigger sweat glands. When a person doesn’t suffer from hyperhidrosis, his nervous system activates the sweat glands when the body temperature gets higher. This way the body naturally cools itself. However, in case of excessive sweating, the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands are overactive.

When the patient is injected with Botox, the hyperactive nerves that trigger sweat glands are temporarily frozen. They stop activating sweat glands and the patient doesn’t sweat too much anymore.

There are some indications that can help the patient realize if they are suffering from excessive sweating. These include:

  • Experiencing excessive sweating minimally once a week.
  • Experiencing excessive sweating without an apparent reason in the last 6 months.
  • Having a family history of excessive sweating.

However, to be absolutely sure that the patient is suffering from hyperhidrosis, he must have an initial consultation with Lucia’s doctor. The doctor will examine the patient and determine if Botox is the right treatment for his issues with hyperhidrosis.

All of Lucia’s doctors are certified to perform this treatment and have completed training at the International Hyperhidrosis Society. Also, they possess a lot of experience in performing this procedure which guarantees patient safety.

There are any special preparations for the Botox treatment, except avoiding shaving for 3 to 4 days.

When the patient arrives for his treatment, first the targeted areas – the patient’s armpits are carefully cleaned. Then the doctor applies a topical numbing cream to make the treatment more comfortable. The treatment doesn’t cause any real pain because the needles are very small – they cause only mild discomfort. Most patients tolerate the treatment really well.

The doctor uses very fine needles to inject the Botox just beneath the patient’s skin. The doctor injects small amounts of Botox into the patient’s armpits by following a previously drawn grid. The injection sites are 1 or 2 centimeters apart.

After the treatment, the patient can continue with his daily routine, because there is no need for downtime.

The treatment may cause minor side effects like bruising, redness and swelling at the injection sites, but this is only temporary.

The treatment usually lasts between 10 and 20minutes. After a week or two, the patient should come to have a follow-up treatment because the doctor might have missed some areas of sweating in the first session. This way the patient is getting the best results from the treatment.

On average, Botox can reduce excessive sweating by more than 80%. The first results are seen 2 to 4 days after the treatment and the best results are visible 2 weeks post-procedure. The patient can expect not to sweat from 4 to 12 months. After this time, the patient can come to get an additional touch-up treatment to maintain the results. Once the patient stops sweating excessively, his quality of life is significantly improved and he can function better in his daily routine.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of this treatment is that it absolutely safe – it doesn’t interfere with other sweat glands in the body. It affects only the once localized in underarm pits which are 2% of the total amount of sweat glands in the body. So, other sweat glands function properly and keep the body cool.

It is a treatment that brings fast-acting results. Most patients see the results after just a couple of days post-procedure. They sweat much less, which makes their lives more comfortable. Moreover, the results are long-lasting too.

The treatment is minimally invasive. Even though Botox is injected with needles, they are very fine and don’t cause real pain. After the treatment, the patient can normally continue with the everyday routine because there is no recovery period.

The treatment can return men’s self-confidence. Excessive sweating can seriously diminish self-confidence, especially in public places and in social interactions. However, once Botox stops overactive glands from producing too much sweat, men don’t have to worry about feeling embarrassed anymore. They become more confident because they look great and can relax when interacting with others.

The treatment is performed by certified and experienced doctors. This is very important because it puts the patient at ease and assures them that they are in good hands. Moreover, having this treatment performed by an expert means that there is little to no risk at all that something will go wrong.

Botox for excessive underarm treatment is definitely one of the most effective and safest treatments for men.
